Last-ditch auction called in bid to save Alitalia – 22/09/08

ITALY. The administrator charged with the future of Italy’s troubled national carrier Alitalia today called a public tender for the business. The move is seen as a last-ditch attempt to sell the airline before it goes into liquidation. It follows a failed rescue bid by investors last week.

Alitalia flights continued over the weekend but the airline could be grounded within a week if no rescue package emerges. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who made saving Alitalia one of his election pledges, acknowledged that it was unlikely that a foreign airline would step in to save the business.
