The Lego Group has revealed Lego Smart Play, an interactive platform designed to extend the Lego System-in-Play by combining physical building with responsive, embedded technology. It is launching in Lego travel retail stores across the USA, Australia, UK, France and Germany from March.
Lego Smart Play enables real-time interaction between Lego builds and children’s actions. The system comprises three core elements: the Lego Smart Brick, Lego Smart Tags and Lego Smart Minifigures, all of which are compatible with existing Lego elements.
At the centre of the platform is the Lego Smart Brick, which incorporates sensors, accelerometers, light and sound sensing, a miniature speaker with onboard synthesiser, and wireless charging. The brick is powered by a custom-made chip measuring smaller than a standard Lego stud.
The company said the platform includes more than 20 patented technologies developed by the Lego Group’s Creative Play Lab to support responsive, screen-free play.
The platform was presented at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, USA (6-9 January) by Chief Product & Marketing Officer Julia Goldin and Senior Vice President and Head of Creative Play Lab Tom Donaldson.

During the CES presentation, the company revealed the first Lego Smart Play building sets will launch in partnership with The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm, with initial releases based on the Star Wars universe. The announcement was supported on stage by Disney Chief Brand Officer Asad Ayaz and Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni.
Goldin commented: “For over 90 years, the Lego Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe. As the world evolves, so do we – innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation.
“Lego Smart Play is the next exciting chapter in our Lego System-in-Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale.”
“The launch of Lego Smart Play brings creativity, technology and storytelling together to make building worlds and stories even more engaging, and all without a screen,” added Donaldson.
“We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year.”

Each All-In-One Lego Star Wars building set includes a Lego Smart Brick with charger, at least one Lego Smart Minifigure and Lego Smart Tags to enable interactive features, such as sound effects, light responses and behaviour-based reactions.
- Lego Star Wars Smart Play – Luke’s Red Five X-Wing: A 584-piece set featuring Smart Minifigures of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, alongside R2-D2, Rebel crew and Stormtrooper Minifigures. Interactive elements include engine sounds, laser effects, refuelling and repair audio linked to an Imperial turret, transporter and command centre.
- Lego Star Wars Smart Play – Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter: A 473-piece set centred on Darth Vader and his fighter ship accompanied by a brick-built Rebel outpost and Imperial fuelling station. The set includes a Smart Minifigure of Darth Vader and a Rebel Fleet Trooper, with interactive engine and battle effects enabled by the Lego Smart Brick.
- Lego Star Wars Smart Play – Throne Room Duel & A-Wing: A 962-piece set recreating the final duel in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. “Our teams work hand-in-hand with best-in-class licensees to bring technology and innovation to products that continue our storytelling in new and unexpected ways,” said Disney Consumer Products Executive Vice President of Global Brand Commercialization Paul Gitter.
“This milestone in our long-time collaboration with the Lego Group adds a new dimension to this legacy, continuing to help fans express their creativity and imagination by extending the Star Wars story through play.”
Goldin added: “We’ve worked with our incredible friends at Lucasfilm for over 25 years, and our focus has always remained on creating original, unique experiences for the fan community through our sets. With Lego Smart Play, legendary stories and characters of the Star Wars galaxy will come to life like never before.”
Lego Smart Play will continue to expand through future set launches, software updates and additional technological developments. ✈
