UAE. Dubai Duty Free celebrated World Environment Day (5 June) by announcing two new initiatives which underline the retailer’s commitment towards environmental protection.
World Environment Day is regarded as the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown into a global platform for public outreach that is celebrated in over 100 countries.
During celebrations at its head office, Dubai Duty Free announced the launch of its Kids Enviro Club (KEC) which is open to Dubai Duty Free employees’ children, aged from six to 12 years old.
KEC targets the next generation. It aims to increase the youngsters’ eco-consciousness and develop a strong sense of leadership and social responsibility when it comes to taking care of the environment. KEC will organise programmes and activities for the children, who will also receive updates and eco-information designed to increase their awareness of environmental issues.
Dubai Duty Free also called for entries in the Dubai Duty Free Environmental Tagline Competition to find the best catchphrase to encapsulate the company’s approach to environmental protection.
The winning entry will be announced at the Clean Up the World campaign in September and will be used as the official Dubai Duty Free environmental tagline to promote and raise public awareness of the company’s commitment to the environment and sustainability.
Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin said: “At Dubai Duty Free we are doing our bit to mark and celebrate World Environment Day.
“The launch of the Kids Enviro Club will offer the children of our employees the opportunity to have lots of fun and to learn about the environment. I think by starting these initiatives at an office level, their impact will eventually make their way in to the home, which will benefit the wider community.”
