L’Oréal hosted a virtual symposium to highlight the pioneering microbiome science behind its best-selling Lancôme Advanced Génifique serum. The formula leans on L’Oréal’s latest microbiome innovation to deliver a patented plant-powered formula that protects, regulates and repairs the skin microbiome.
The skin microbiome is a living ecosystem filled with beneficial microorganisms that are fundamental to healthy skin. Our microbiome is unique and evolves throughout our lives. Each person’s microbiome has up to 1,000 species of bacteria with as much as two million bacteria existing with every 2cm of skin.
The skin microbiome is invisible but not invincible and L’Oréal discovered that the skin’s microbiome can be negatively impacted by pollution, UV light, stress, and other lifestyle factors.
Building on 15 years of microbiome research, L’Oréal has partnered with 23 global microbiome science experts, carried out 57 clinical studies and generated more than 500 million data points to develop the Lancôme Advanced Génifique formula.
The formula protects the beneficial microorganisms in the skin and acts as the first line of defence against environmental aggressors and pathogens. It regulates skin microorganisms and modulates excessive inflammation and also repairs the skin microbiome which plays a key role in skin barrier function and strength.
The new Lancôme Advanced Génifique features a potent complex of seven pre & probiotic fractions that helps skin recover +77% faster from the very first drop, based on an Instrumental test comparing the serum with bare skin. It is comprised of three biotech-based prebiotics to promote balanced growth of beneficial bacteria and four probiotic fractions with four microorganism strains.
Each drop of Lancôme Advanced Génifique delivers 30 million pre & probiotic fractions. After one bottle, skin becomes younger, stronger and more radiant based on a sensory test of 34 women who used the serum for an eight-week period.
The microbiome science behind Lancôme Advanced Génifique was revealed during a virtual symposium attended by L’Oréal Group’s leading scientific figures. They outlined the most significant developments in L’Oréal’s microbiome science research and how these were applied to the formula of Lancôme Advanced Génifique. Lancôme International Scientific Director Dr. Annie Black and L’Oréal Research Microbiology Laboratory & Project Leader Dr. Ahmad Khodr led the virtual event.
Lancôme Laboratories Project Leader Marine Pegeon outlined the extensive testing procedure for Lancôme Advanced Génifique, while University of California, San Diego, Department of Dermatology Professor Richard Gallo MD, PH.D and City University of Hong Kong School of Energy and Environment Professor Patrick K.H. Lee PH.D illustrated the importance of the skin microbiome and how it is negatively impacted by environmental stressors.
“Within our bodies we have a living ecosystem of healthy bacteria, which regulates communication between yourself and your skin microbiome and also repairs it. Our study of microbiome science has really redefined how we develop products, we used to develop products to benefit the skin — now we develop products to benefit the skin microbiome,” said Lancôme International Scientific Director Dr. Annie Black.
“Our microbiome is a beneficial and invisible system of microorganisms. It is a harmonised ecosystem that plays a major role in our skin defence,” said Dr. Ahmad Khodr. “The balance of the microbiome is essential to our skin health, but its balance is frequently threatened.
“L’Oréal has proven that your microbiome evolves with age and that pollution can trigger premature signs of ageing. Our objective is to gain a better understanding of how aggressors can affect the skin and Lancôme Advanced Génifique was designed to support the microbiome’s ability to protect, regulate and repair the skin.”
