Lufthansa passengers rise +1.2% in November – 09/12/09

GERMANY. German airline Lufthansa announced that its passenger traffic rose +1.2% in November compared with the same month last year to 4.43 million.

European traffic rose by +1.4% and the Middle East and Africa traffic by +4.9%. Conversely, traffic on the Americas and Asia Pacific routes declined by -0.7% and -1.4% respectively.

Capacity rose +1.3% despite a -1.3% reduction in the number of flights. This increase arose from the modernisation of the company’s fleet, which included the replacement of smaller aircraft with larger ones on European routes and from the reduction of Business Class on long-haul routes.

The load factor, which measures the average number of seats sold as a proportion of seats available on flights, declined -0.9 percentage points to 74.8%.

The Lufthansa Group as a whole, which also includes SWISS, Austrian Airlines and British Midland, experienced an increase in passenger traffic of +24.3% to 6.78 million passengers. That surge was driven by the consolidation of British Midland (bmi) and Austrian.
