Macau visitor numbers maintain strong recovery in July

MACAU, CHINA. The number of visitors to Macau in July rose to the highest monthly level since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, at 2.75 million.

Data from the Statistics and Census Service shows last month’s figure was +24.9% higher than in June.

It represented a surge of +28,180% over the low base in the same month last year, though July arrivals were still down -24.5% compared to the same month in 2019.

The accelerating tourism recovery in Macau is encouraging news for travel retail. Pictured above is T Galleria Beauty by DFS Macau and its ‘Explore New Dimensions’ campaign launched earlier this month.  

Mainland China remained the top contributor to Macau tourism with 1.9 million visitors – 1,087,315 of them travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme.

By source market, Mainland China was followed by Hong Kong with 660,878 visitors and Taiwan with 58,539.

Citing a recent report by the China Tourism Academy, the government noted that Macau tops the list of the most favoured destinations by Mainland Chinese tourists.

The Asian gambling hub welcomed 14.4 million tourists in the first seven months of the year, up by +314.6% compared to last year. ✈
