Malmö-Sturup is the gateway to the SkÃ¥ne region and Sweden’s third biggest airport |
SWEDEN. Malmö-Sturup Airport officially opened its new terminal at a special ceremony on Monday, which was attended by The Moodie Report. The terminal was opened by Göran Tunhammar, the County Governor of Skåne, Illmar Reepalu, Chairman of Malmö City Executive Board, Lars Rekke, Director General of the LFV Group and Lennart Björk, Airport Manager, Malmö-Sturup Airport. The Nuance Group Europe CEO Jean-Paul Bonnel and General Manager Sweden Thomas Friberg were also there.
Björk said: “Today we open the doors to a new modern airport designed for travellers to and from the SkÃ¥ne region. The reconstruction of the terminal and the larger array of stores and restaurants coupled with other recently introduced amenities and services, such as wireless Internet access and hotel and conference facilities, provides the traveller with an excellent selection of commercial services, all in a pleasant and comfortable airport.”
The terminal now handles both domestic and international passengers. Between now and 2010, passenger numbers are forecast to double from the current 900,000 passengers a year. Malmö-Sturup is Sweden’s third biggest airport by passenger numbers.
As previously reported, Nuance took over the store at Malmö-Sturup in January, and reopened it after six months of redevelopment, doubling space to 455sq m.
LFV Head of Commercial Margareta Engström told The Moodie Report: “The terminal now has a lively, bright feel to it, and that is matched by the retail offer, characterised by the rapeseed yellow that is carried through the building. That reflects the fact that we are in the SkÃ¥ne region of Sweden, something that was important to us.
“Malmö is a pilot case for mixing domestic and international passengers in the same areas, and based on its success, we are looking at introducing something similar at Gothenburg. There, Nuance has two shops, but we’d like to centralise all departures just as we have done here. We have a good partnership with Nuance and we’ll be investing with them over the next four years.” Nuance has contracts at 15 Swedish airports until 2010.
