Mango continues travel retail expansion at San Francisco Airport

Mango’s 59sq m store at San Francisco Airport Terminal 2 uses the brand’s new minimalist Wabi design concept

SPAIN/US. Spanish fashion chain Mango has continued its expansion in the travel retail sector with the opening of a second store at San Francisco Airport.

The brand’s first store in the airport is in Terminal 3; the new shop is in the recently renovated and reopened T2. In addition to these two locations, Mango has a third store in San Francisco, in the Westfield San Francisco Centre.

This new opening brings the total number of Mango stores in the US to ten, located in Costa Mesa, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Santa Monica and Washington.

The T2 store covers 59sq m and uses the brand’s new Wabi design concept, which is characterised by minimalist spaces with the warmth of natural objects. The materials used are natural, such as the wooden parquet floor, and the walls are lined with linen to create a welcoming atmosphere. For lighting, two Foscarini lamps have been used.

Mango said it remained on track with its expansion and is consolidating its presence in the travel retail market, having opened stores in airports such as Düsseldorf, Kuala Lumpur, London, Madrid, Manchester, New Delhi and Zürich. The new shop at San Francisco Airport brings the total to nine stores in international airports with the highest air traffic.

Mango began its international expansion in 1992 with the opening of two franchises in Portugal. The brand increased its points of sale by 380 in 2010, representing more than one store opening each day; seven of these stores were in Spain and the rest in other countries.

Mango is using the US actress Scarlett Johansson again as the face of its new Summer campaign. Johansson has worked with the brand for four seasons, and this will be the last season that she models the company’s designs.

The Goldstein Residence, a house with characteristic architecture located in Beverly Hills, was the setting for the photo session to capture the new Summer 2011 season. Mario Sorrenti was the photographer.

The new Mango collection, called Modernist Resort, has gone for a clean, modernist look with a focus on simple lines and minimalist silhouettes that add energy with bright colours and graphic contrasts in the stripes.

The colour palette consists of blocks of colour in bright lemons and mint green, while watermelon and the various nude and tan shades add a touch of utilitarian luxury to the collection, with chic combinations that contrast with the muted colours and the gold fastenings. Touches of bright colours such as reds, oranges and yellows bring light to the range of beige tones, while the retro sailor look is achieved with the use of blues.
