US. Maui Jim Sunglasses reports that its eye-catching appearance at last month’s TFWA Asia Pacific show has attracted the attention of several high-profile retailers in the region.

Hawaiian shirts and floral-garlanded hula dancers were de rigueur at the US company’s colourful Singapore stand.

Listings have been confirmed with The Nuance Group at Sydney Airport and Melbourne Airport since the exhibition.

Several key contracts had been put in place in Asia before the show, including: Seoul Incheon Airport (DFS Group); Hong Kong and Singapore (DFS Galleria Stores); Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (King Power); Singapore Changi Airport (Valiram Group); and Brisbane Airport (Nuance).

Newly appointed Sales Manager for Duty Free Asia and Australasia Ben Arriola is now following up strong leads with Alpha Asia for Delhi Airport, Nuance-Watson in Hong Kong International Airport, Sunrise Duty Free for Beijing Airport and Malaysia Airports at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The brand’s success in Asia Pacific follows a tremendous first quarter for Maui Jim Sales Manager Duty Free Europe and Middle East, Martine Larroque:

  • Ranked fourth in sunglasses sales at London Gatwick in March, she has confirmed the extension of Maui Jim listings with World Duty Free to six locations in its UK airports – at Heathrow Terminals 3 and 4, three outlets at Gatwick, and Stansted. In April, Maui Jim opened with Nuance in two locations at Manchester Airport.

  • Sales at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport are reported to have “far exceeded expectations” since listings began three months ago in three locations, with 35 pairs sold in just 10 days at one.
  • Following a rapid increase in sales at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Aelia is listing the brand in the new S3 terminal when it opens this month, as well as at Luton Airport in the UK.
  • Maui Jim Sunglasses will also feature from this month at Cyprus DFS.
  • Harding Brothers has listed 36 Maui Jim skus onboard Azamara, which is currently cruising the Caribbean.
  • The brand entered Bahrain Duty Free in May, Egypt in June at Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada, and Dubai Duty Free is next on the list. Strong interest has also been expressed by duty free outlets in Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Qatar and Sharjah. This follows a tour of the Middle East by Larroque.

Maui Jim’s sunglasses come in a variety of lenses and a choice of over 70 frames from the Classic, Sport, Shields, Stainless Steel, Titanium Elite and Flexon memory fit collections, as well as a recently-launched Universal Fit collection designed to suit wider face shapes.

Said Duty Free Sales Director Giles Marks: “Travel retail is a natural for this brand. There is a high throughput of potential customers who are generally sophisticated shoppers, looking for quality and good value, with relatively high disposable income and time to make an informed purchase.

Maui Jim Sunglasses offer “unrivalled glare-protection” says the company

“Maui Jim Sunglasses appeal because they are not only fabulously stylish with high fashion ranges and timeless classic styles, but thanks to PolarisedPlus lenses they also offer the best possible protection against bright sunlight while not impairing colours or visual acuity. Anyone who tried out our glasses on-stand in Singapore with our special light panels, or who has enjoyed a game of golf or a sea fishing trip under their protection can vouch for their excellence. We see a very bright future in duty free.”
