Meet The Moodie Davitt Report team: Introducing China Travel Retail Express Editor Dachang Wang

The Moodie Davitt Report may bear the names of its Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie and long-time President (and since 2015 Co-Owner) Dermot Davitt, but there is much more to the company than its two leaders.

Our diverse and inclusive, multi-talented, multi-cultural 24-member team (including regular freelancers and consultants) is based across numerous locations, including Hong Kong, Hainan, Ireland, Wales, England and the Philippines.

They speak eight languages between them and collectively represent the leading travel retail B2B publisher and events company with distinction across administration & finance, editorial, events, film, research, sales and technology.

We are pleased to introduce the team in this regular column. Please meet our China-based China Travel Retail Express Editor Dachang Wang.

A valued team member, Dachang oversees The Moodie Davitt Report’s China Travel Retail Express on WeChat and supports the company’s growing Chinese engagement
“Whether watching movies, listening to music, or simply daydreaming, these little pleasures are vital to my well-being,” Dachang reflects.

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Wang Dachang, and I’m from the sunny island city of Haikou in Hainan Province – a tropical paradise surrounded by ocean waves. Born and raised here, I’ve grown up fully immersed in the vibrant rhythm of island living.

I come from a big, lively family. My parents raised four children – one older brother, two sisters and me – with our grandparents still happily presiding over the household. Now that my siblings are all married, our family gatherings are always filled with laughter and warmth.

During my childhood, I had a beloved dog named Xianhua, who became my playful companion. Though she eventually went missing, those golden memories remain treasured chapters of my youth.

Surrounded by love and the affection of doting siblings, I grew up with a sense of warmth that has stayed with me into adulthood.

Professionally, I gained my first corporate experience interning at Beijing SMZDM Technology (a listed ecommerce tech firm) during university. After graduation, I launched my career as a Brand Manager in the marketing department of Hainan Tourism Investment Duty Free Corporation.

When did you join The Moodie Davitt Report?

I joined The Moodie Davitt Report in May 2023 – already two amazing years.

What is your role?

I currently serve as Editor of China Travel Retail Express, where I oversee content focused on China’s travel retail sector.

The 2024 China International Consumer Products Expo stands out as my most memorable experience. During the event, I had the privilege of engaging with numerous international brand executives and finally meeting my colleagues in person after previous virtual collaborations – an incredibly rewarding experience.

What is your approach to work, your business philosophy?

Dachang brings a playful edge to the studio spotlight and enjoys a seasonal break in snow-covered Harbin

I approach my professional life with a continuous learning mindset, bringing full commitment and genuine enjoyment to every task. I’m passionate about taking on new challenges and view each one as an opportunity to grow. For me, enthusiasm and curiosity are the most powerful drivers of meaningful work.

What makes you tick? Your positive/negative traits?

I’m naturally optimistic and energetic. I excel in teamwork and welcome challenges. As for less ideal traits, I sometimes get caught up in details, but I’m learning to balance perfectionism with efficiency.

How important are leisure time and out of work interests?

Hobbies add spice to life – they reset my mood and relieve stress. Whether watching movies, listening to music, or simply daydreaming, these little pleasures are vital to my well-being.

A must-have in duty-free?

Perfume, absolutely. As someone highly attuned to scents, I value how fragrances create emotional connections. My growing perfume collection reflects my belief that scent is a silent memory trigger – it can become the most distinctive impression others have of you.

And a desert island choice of music and book – or something else?

I’d choose an eternally powered portable camera. I’d document every moment – the solitude, surprises and self-reflections. Years later, these snapshots would remind me, “Look what an extraordinary journey you experienced.”
