Retail reset at Shanghai airports: In shock news, Sunrise Duty Free, the incumbent duty-free retailer at the city’s twin airports, could not bid for the Pudong and Hongqiao concessions as majority owner China Duty Free Group (CDFG) did not back its participation. The decision adds to uncertainty over whether Sunrise can join the upcoming Beijing Capital Airport duty-free tender closing on 19 December. On 11 December we added a special alert (pictured below) on the outcome of the tender with CDFG and international retail powerhouse Avolta – through Dufry (Shanghai) Commercial Co – sharing the spoils.

Key bidding battle: Incheon International Airport Corporation is set to launch a tender for its main DF1 and DF2 duty-free concessions as The Shilla Duty Free and Shinsegae Duty Free are expected to end their multi-store contracts over financial and contractual issues. The Shilla Duty Free will bid alongside Lotte Duty Free and Hyundai Duty Free despite penalties for early exit, while Shinsegae Duty Free has yet to decide. Pivotal bid for Beijing Airport retail: Beijing Capital International Airport has opened a major dual tender for its T2 and T3 duty-free concessions, covering over 14,000sq m and an eight-year term until 2034. This reopens the market previously held by China Duty Free Group (T2) and its majority-owned subsidiary, Sunrise Duty Free (T3), signalling a strategic reshuffle of in one of the worldʼs key travel retail markets. Hainan duty-free shopping surge: November duty-free sales in Hainan climbed +27.1% year-on-year to CNY2.38 billion (US$336.6 million) after the introduction of the enhanced policy on 1 November. A total of 329,000 shoppers purchased 1.91 million items, benefitting from the addition of new categories including pet products, consumer electronics, small appliances and musical instruments. Tianjin duty free debut: CDFG has expanded its downtown network with the launch of a flagship duty-free store in Tianjin on 28 November. The flagship store marks an important step towards developing Tianjin into an international consumption hub in northern China. Xi’an’s new shopping landmark: China Duty Free Group, in partnership with China West Airport Group, has launched Northwest China’s first downtown duty-free store in the commercial centre of Xiʼan. This opening reflects the city’s push to become an international shopping destination while celebrating its historic legacy as the ancient capital of Changʼan.
