Munich Airport maintains major investment plans; non-aviation revenues among the keys to growth – 29/09/09

Munich Airport: Plans major investment in satellite terminal and new runway

GERMANY. Munich Airport is maintaining its ambitious expansion plans for the future despite the downturn in passenger traffic, CEO Michael Kerkloh has told The Moodie Report.

He said: “The key investments that will aid our growth will be in our third runway and in a new satellite building to Terminal 2, which will also house substantial space for commercial [over 8,000sq m -Ed]. That will open by the middle of the next decade. While we are undertaking this work we will also improve the central zone of T1 to create more generous spaces for retail and food & beverage, which are needed there.”

Kerkloh was speaking at the recent unveiling of the airport’s new “˜Pure Brands’ zone, which features leading skincare and cosmetics brands MAC, Jo Malone, Bobbi Brown and Kiehl’s. The airport also opened a new 70sq m Ralph Lauren store and a refurbished and expanded Hugo Boss/Zegna outlet.

He said: “It’s a difficult time, but this is the time for innovation, the time to be brave, the time to try new concepts. Non-aviation income is 47% of our turnover, and retail is a critical part of that. Because we also operate shops and restaurants through our own subsidiaries such as Eurotrade and Allresto, it’s even more vital for our business, and key to our profits.”

Munich Airport handled 3,035,915 passengers in August, down by -3.1% on August 2008. But the figures were a sharp improvement on the -4.2% fall in July and the -9.2% drop in June. Kerkloh pointed to “resilient” intercontinental traffic as a key factor in the improving figures.

Note: A full report on Munich Airport’s commercial activities will appear in The Moodie Report Digital Print Edition for October, out at TFWA World Exhibition.
