UK. A new ferry route to Norway is planned as Scotland’s second direct European sea link. The news comes as the Scottish National Party launches a campaign for an expansion of ferry routes from Rosyth, 13km from Edinburgh.
This could offer duty free opportunities as Norway is not in the European Union. A twice-weekly service from Rosyth to Kristiansand or Trondheim in Norway is being considered.
Norway is deemed as an important niche market for British tourists. Kristiansand, on the west coast north of Bergen in mid-Norway, provides year-round skiing on the glaciers. Trondheim, twinned with the Scottish town of Dunfermline for six decades, is Norway’s third biggest city after Oslo and Bergen.
The Scotsman newspaper reported that hauliers are believed to prefer a route to Kristiansand. A fast catamaran ferry could transport passengers from Kristiansand to Trondheim.
Greek haulier Superfast is examining the feasibility of a Norwegian service from Rosyth after being approached by Norwegian businesses.
