No allowances made for LAGs breach as Chinese traveller is jailed for refusing to hand over perfume – 19/03/08

CHINA. A male traveller was this week jailed for five days after refusing to hand a bottle of fragrance over to airport security, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Following a recent attempted terrorist attack linked to a domestic flight, the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) issued a notice last Friday banning passengers from taking liquids onto aircraft on domestic flights, including baby food, cosmetics and medicine.

The passenger was detained in an airport in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality for “forcefully pushing past the security checkpoint” with perfume in his hand baggage, the local media reported.

The man was flying to Nanjing from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. He was found to be carrying a bottle of perfume in his bag at a security check point on Monday evening. But he denied carrying the perfume, abused the inspectors and forcefully rushed forward, according to the official.

The CAAC said the new rule was to ensure passenger safety and property security. The country is on a high state of alert due to the Olympic Games in Beijing later this year.
