The new PayPDA device has secure mobile Chip and PIN and contactless payment processing capabilities |
UK. Onboard retail systems provider Novo IVC has launched a range of products that aim to optimise inflight retail potential.
The company has introduced the PayPDA, developed in partnership with the manufacturer and payment processing firm Ingenico. The lightweight, rugged handheld device is described as fully accredited with the most comprehensive secure mobile Chip and PIN and contactless payment processing capabilities in travel retail, according to the firm.
The PayPDA is designed with data security in mind: on one side a tamper-proof PIN pad and on the other an independent PDA.
The PIN pad part of the device uses E2EE (end-to-end encryption) to ensure optimum card data security while the PDA side houses Novo’s inflight software SkyPOS, designed to speed up onboard sales.
SkyPOS front-end software: The PayPDA integrates with Novo’s onboard SkyPOS software. In addition to the increased onboard payment options, SkyPOS can be set to training mode for new or returning crew and comes with an extensive portfolio of weightless products such as gifts that can be delivered to your home, onward travel such as train tickets and destination-specific attractions such as theatre, theme parks and historic landmarks. SkyPOS is used by over 5 million cabin crew worldwide.
SkyBOS back-end software: The SkyBOS ground-based back office is said to provide an innovative easy-to-use modern interface together with integration with Novo’s SkyPOS onboard software. The stock analysis/management report functionality is designed to enable effective management of onboard operations, including warehouse, deliveries, bar packing and pick face logistics, streamlining both onboard and ground-based processes.
GPRS: With the addition of GPRS functionality, Novo’s solutions are claimed to deliver improved speed of communication and security. Increased speed of data transfer when using Novo’s back-office system SkyBOS allows for faster management reporting, cash and stock reconciliation.
Fraud prevention: Increased levels of security can also be achieved in several areas, says Novo IVC. The need to input a four-digit code against a card increases passenger perception of security. From a crew perspective, an up-to-date “hot card file” is automatically loaded on to the device so that when a fraudulent card transaction is attempted, Novo software will warn crew not to take payment using that card. In addition, sensitive data is stored on a tamper-proof secure kernel, removing the risk of data being removed from the unit when it is in transit. GPRS communication helps to combat fraud by reducing the time it takes to process a payment.
Commenting on the new products, Novo IVC Divisional Director Tim Clifford said: “We are very excited by the potential of Novo’s innovative retail POS system. The additional capabilities will enable Novo to help their airline clients deliver a truly first-class onboard retail operation. It is obvious to us that our potential clients are as excited as we are about the operational efficiencies that the system brings. Even in the pre-launch phase we saw several leading airlines committing to the new Novo solution.”
He continued: “Our most recent client acquisition is Thomas Cook, who will be one of the first airlines in the industry to offer Chip and PIN and contactless card reading payment options onboard their aircraft.”
