HONG KONG. Nuance-Watson (Hong Kong) last week unveiled the winning designs of the 2008 “˜Save & Preserve’ Green Poster Design Competition, part of the retailer’s environmentally-friendly drive. As reported the prize presentation was held last week at The Plaza store at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
The competition follows the “˜Save & Preserve’ programme launched last year, which saw weekly plastic bag consumption successfully reduced by -20% at Nuance-Watson’s stores in HKIA.
The design competition aimed to reward students’ commitment to the environment by enabling them to become ‘Green Ambassadors’ for Hong Kong, and to share their creative environmental ideas with millions of passengers, said the retailer.
The competition attracted over 20 quality entries from seven participating local tertiary institutions and design schools: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Chinese University of HK, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, CO1 Design School, Hong Kong Ching Ying Institute of Visual Arts, Hong Kong School of Design and First Institute of Art and Design.

The First Prize-winning design, by design student Shirley Poon, features an eye-catching green leaf umbrella. It has already been adapted as the key thematic visual for lightboxes, banners and signage across all Nuance-Watson’s stores at HKIA. The umbrella design will also be used to publicise the company’s “˜Save & Preserve’ campaign throughout the remainder of the year.

Using the green leaf umbrella to symbolise “green power”, Ms Poon said she hoped Hong Kong can achieve “a balance of urban development and industrial growth while protecting itself against potential environmental problems such as acid rain and climate change”.

All poster designs were exhibited at The Plaza store in an eco-friendly way. Unlike traditional exhibitions, which require display materials and panels, Nuance-Watson (HK), set up a large LCD screen in The Plaza’s high-profile shop front.
Supporting the poster design initiative as judges were Eva Tsang, General Manager of Retail & Advertising at Airport Authority Hong Kong; Martin Moodie, Founder and Publisher of The Moodie Report; and renowned local photographer and artist Water Poon. With the exception of Poon, who was away, the judges joined Alessandra Piovesana, Regional Managing Director of Nuance-Watson (HK), at last week’s prize presentation.
