Ormonde Jayne’s exclusive collection finds a niche in Dubai

Exclusive collection: Ormonde Jayne’s range includes 12 fragrances in total, including three men’s lines

UK. UK fragrance brand Ormonde Jayne Perfumery has exclusively updated The Moodie Report on the measured international expansion of its award-winning range of 12 fragrances, including three men’s lines.

Ormonde Jayne, a niche perfume house based in London’s top shopping location Old Bond Street, was created – and is owned – by perfumer Linda Pilkington, who sources rare and exquisite oils to make this award-winning range of parfums, scented candles and bathing products.

Ormonde Jayne was named as Brand of the Year in 2008 and was recently shortlisted for Best Emerging British Luxury Brand by the UK luxury goods organisation The Walpole Committee.

Last year, Ormonde Jayne opened a store in Dubai’s Boutique 1 in Jumeirah Beach.

The perfumes are made with great attention to detail in a London laboratory from rare flowers from around the world, including Black Hemlock, Champaca, Sampaquita, Black Iris and Tolu.

Celebrity fans include Yasmin Le Bon, Elton John, Will Smith, Bryan Ferry, Goldie Hawn and Ashley Jensen.

What the experts say: some product testimonials

“If anyone creates a perfume collection a century from now, it will quite possibly resemble Ormonde Jayne’s.” Ormonde Man edp awarded a maximum five stars by Chandler Burr, Perfume Critic of The New York Times.

“Ormonde Jayne is the small but seductive shop in London’s Royal Arcade and you really should smell these candles. There’s Osmanthus, an uplifting mix of lime, pomelo, mint, galbanum & jasmine. Others feature Casablanca Lily, Sampaquita, sambac, coriander. All of them not only transport you to another world, at least emotionally, but they also come in the chicest orange box and are hand-made at the brand’s candle studio in London.” Edwina Ings Chambers, Beauty & Luxury Editor of The Financial Times.

“My quest is over. I found it. A perfume that is happy to let you wear it and not the other way around. Orris Noir is a perfume that is both comforting and sensual, it’s exotic but not overpowering and smells like a classic even though it’s new. What really makes me like Linda Pilkington (Ormonde Jayne’s creator and perfumer) is that she isn’t a perfume bore. She just likes to smell nice, and has enough confidence to create perfumes that do that, but with a twist of something you won’t find in duty free. And although her packaging is pretty, that is not what you are paying for: the money is going towards top-quality ingredients. Her formulas (by which I mean the base oils that create the scent itself) cost between £350 and £400 a kilo. A commercial perfume would spend £70-£80 a kilo.” Sarah Vine, Beauty Editor of The Times, London.

“Masculine fragrances rarely venture outside tried-and-tested stereotypes. Ormonde Man, derived from its signature feminine, is a sultry woody floral that sounds a muted, tourmaline-green chord from top note to dry-down. Hear it once, and you’ll want it again.” Ormonde Man edp awarded a maximum five marks by Luca Turin, author of “Perfumes: A Guide”.

“Ormonde Jayne is a find, a tiny shop just off London’s Old Bond Street owned by a petite woman of impeccable taste called Linda Pilkington. Her signature scents are things like Ta’if and Champaca. These exotic essences are set in olfatory context: the hint of dates and orange blossom found in her bottles of Ta’if signify the rose growers’ favoured foods. By the same token, basmati rice and tea are found in the background of Champaca, a small wildflower from India. Hemlock is at the woody heart of her delicious fragrance Ormonde Man – the perfect gift for distinguished ladykillers!” Nick Foulkes, Newsweek Magazine.
