Penderyn welcomes Gareth Bale as shareholder and global ambassador

Penderyn Distillery – the ‘home of Welsh whisky’ – has welcomed Welsh professional football superstar Gareth Bale as a company shareholder and global ambassador.

Bale is a key player in the Welsh team for the FIFA World Cup 2022*, which starts in Qatar next week.

Proud to be Welsh: Gareth Bale with Penderyn Yma O Hyd single malt, the tenth release in the Penderyn Icons of Wales series

Penderyn Chief Executive Stephen Davies said: “It is a combination of two global Welsh brands. Gareth Bale is an ambassador for Wales as a nation all around the world, and Penderyn is renowned for world class award-winning single malts and other spirits and is now distributed in over 50 countries.

“We are very pleased to create this partnership as we continue to build our brands world-wide.”

Bale, who plays for Los Angeles FC in the USA, has won 108 caps for Wales, scoring 40 goals, and is Wales’ highest goal scorer. Originally from Cardiff, he began his career with Southampton – at the same time as Penderyn was laying down their first single malts – before playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid. He has claimed five UEFA Champions Leagues Winners Medals and three La Liga titles.

Bale said he is proud of the new partnership with Penderyn. “Everyone knows how proud I am to be Welsh and so it is a privilege to be able to invest in and become an ambassador for such an amazing Welsh brand.

“Penderyn single-handedly revived whisky production in Wales and have become an international success story because of their passion for the product and commitment to quality. It is hugely satisfying to be able to play my part in their continued success.”

Penderyn has partnered with the Football Association of Wales for many years, most recently to produce the Penderyn ‘Yma O Hyd’ single malt. The expression was launched in September to celebrate Wales’ forthcoming World Cup campaign. It will be featured in travel retail exclusively by Dufry in airports in Cardiff and Bristol through in-store tastings during the World Cup.

Part of the distillery’s Icons of Wales range, Penderyn ‘Yma O Hyd’ takes its name from the patriotic anthem adopted by the ‘Red Wall’ Welsh football supporters.

#TogetherStronger: Yma O Hyd was written in 1981 by folk singer, Dafydd Iwan. It reflects on the darkness that engulfed Wales after being a ‘whole nation’ under the Roman Emperor Macsen Wledig in 383AD.

Its chorus of “Ry’n ni yma o hyd, Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth, Ry’n ni yma o hyd” translates into English as “We are still here, in spite of everyone and everything, we are still here”.

“In the future Penderyn will be producing special celebratory ‘Gareth Bale’ whiskies but for now, we wish Gareth Bale, manager Robert Page and the Welsh team and staff the very best of luck in the World Cup,” Davies added.

*As reported, The Moodie Davitt Report readers’ competition dedicated to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is now open. Already nearly 100 entries have been received, a combination of solo and team efforts.

All sponsorship revenues (to be announced soon) from the free to enter competition will go to our nominated charity for 2022 and 2023, Smile Train*. The Moodie Davitt Report is absorbing all costs.

We will be also announcing some great prizes later this week as excitement builds both for the competition and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 itself.

The competition, open to anyone involved in the aviation and travel retail sectors (mandatory), is based on match predictions for the 32 teams in a group stage and knockout format. It will begin on Sunday 20 November when hosts Qatar face Ecuador and conclude on 18 December with the World Cup Final at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.

The rules are simple. Qualified readers simply need to make a score prediction in each of the matches, and will be awarded points based on the accuracy of their predictions. You will receive 3 points for an exact score prediction and 1 point if you predict the right result (win or draw) without getting the score correct. It’s simple, fun and all for a great cause.

You can sign up here. Just create an account and you can immediately begin saving your score predictions.

You can also enter as a team, by choosing ‘Team’ as your first name when you sign up and entering the name of your team as your surname (For instance ‘Team Moodie Davitt’).

We will be offering prizes for best individual and best team and perhaps some special prizes along the way.

FIFA World Cup Showdown

Two of travel retail’s leading players have taken up The Moodie Davitt Report’s challenge as to who can best predict the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 results. The first, perhaps not surprisingly, is Qatar Duty Free, whose Vice President Thabet Musleh reckons his team will dismiss us as easily as his beloved Liverpool will ultimately head off Manchester City in the UK Premiership.

Fellow Liverpool supporter Barry Geoghegan’s dynamic Duty Free Global has also taken up The Moodie Davitt Report’s challenge.

Whichever companies lose the match-up will fund a US$250 cleft operation for Smile Train and change a child’s and a family’s life forever.

We encourage you to set up your own challenges, with peer companies or within divisions of a company. Keep us posted on how you are getting on.
