Porsche Design to unveil all-black mobile phone – 11/01/10

P’9522 Black Edition Mobile Phone

GERMANY. Porsche Design has announced that its second mobile phone will be available in a new variant, the P’9522 Black Edition, from the end of January 2009.

Like its predecessor, the P’9521 mobile phone, the new product has already won several design awards: a Good Design Award 2009 and an iF Product Design Award 2010.

The straight lines and purist form of the phone are emphasised by the combination of matt black anodised aluminium and black mineral glass. The casing is milled from a block of solid aluminium. It also bears the laser text ‘Porsche Design Black Edition’ on the back.

“Black is the colour of Porsche Design,” explained Porsche Design Group CEO Dr Juergen Gessler. “Black has characterised us from the start. The very first product from the Porsche Design brand was a pitch black watch – that was revolutionary at the time and caused a worldwide stir.

“As is typical for Porsche Design, the black has a functional background: the Chronograph I is derived from the appearance of the non-reflective instruments used in racing cars, in which everything right down to the instruments is matt black. This avoids unwanted reflections and guarantees easy readability.”

A unique feature of the Porsche Design cell phone is a sensor that reads fingerprints, so that the user can identify himself for secure access.

The first Porsche Design cell phone, the P’9521, received a number of national and international awards. Readers of the German telecommunications magazine “connect” voted the P’9521 Product of the Year 2007 in the luxury cell phone category.

The phone also received an iF Product Design Award in 2008 and was singled out for its innovation, design and user comfort at the Plus X Awards, Europe’s largest technology, sport and lifestyle competition.

Porsche Design picks up three design awards

In related news, Industrie Forum Hannover has presented Porsche Design with a total of three iF Product Design Awards this year – for the P’9522 mobile phone, the P’8810 Reading Tool reading glasses and the P’1700 Shoe Collection.

The jury recognised design quality, workmanship, material selection and level of innovation.

“We choose to focus on products inspired by technology with a timeless, functional and purist design,” commented Dr Gessler. “It is essential that we do not follow fashion trends and instead design enduring products. Trends come and go – design lasts forever. In keeping with this motto, our aim is to create companions for life. We’re delighted that this philosophy inspires not only us.

“Since the brand was established in 1972, we have already received more than 100 national and international awards for our products, which we see as a commitment.”

Porsche Design P’8810 Reading Tool reading glasses are made of eight sub-segments inspired by a snail shell design, so they can be folded up in a minimum size of nine by three centimetres, only a little larger than a cigarette lighter. The ultra-light titanium and hi-tech synthetics are designed to provide stability and comfort.

Porsche Design’s P’1700 Shoe Collection for Spring/Summer 2010 includes four different shapes, from classic and formal to sporty and casual.

The shoes have an innovative TPU sole. Another unique feature is the strengthening of the open shank, which in conventional shoes joins the heel and the forefoot. In the Porsche Design shoe collection, the profile of the steel shank has been reduced and is complemented by a metal element. This is visibly integrated in the sole and lends the shoes a unique look. The seams are also folded in, so no stitches are visible.
