URUGUAY. Aeropuertos Uruguay is set to unveil a modern terminal at Punta del Este Airport, featuring an expansive commercial space and state-of-the-art facilities.
With opening planned for late December, the terminal is set to enhance the travel experience and reinforce the airport’s status as the leading executive aviation hub in the region.
Aeropuertos Uruguay, part of the Corporación América Airports group, manages eight airports across the country, including Carrasco, Rivera International, Carmelo, Salto, Durazno, Melo and Paysandú.
This project will triple the existing terminal’s size while adding premium amenities and services, representing an important development for the sector and the company.
Highlights of the expansion include modern design, fully accessible amenities, a larger duty-free store and customised preferential experiences.
Punta del Este Airport General Manager Alejandro Rivero said: “Punta del Este Airport is the gateway to one of the most important tourist destinations in the country and the region. This project is a key part of our goal to continually enhance the passenger experience and to expand the long-term appeal of the destination to a discerning audience seeking the highest standards in quality and service.”
Aeropuertos Uruguay General Aviation Manager Damián Pera added: “The General Aviation Terminal in Punta del Este stands out for its excellence in service quality, prime location and personalised attention to a select clientele from around the world, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
“More travellers are choosing this option for its versatility, flexibility and comfort and we always want to offer them a space that exceeds their expectations.”
As part of the modernisation programme, Punta del Este Airport recently unveiled an exclusive, comfortable Pilot Lounge, providing private flight crews with an exclusive and comfortable space for year-round arrivals.
Expanding regional connectivity for 2024-2025
For commercial passenger flights, Punta del Este Airport offers multiple connectivity options this season, linking the airport with key cities in the region.
Aerolíneas Argentinas will increase its Punta del Este-Buenos Aires (Aeroparque) routes starting in December, with up to two or three daily flights during peak season, primarily operated by Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The São Paulo route, operated by Azul on Thursdays and Sundays, will see additional flights during peak season, with two more weekly connections from Viracopos International Airport in São Paulo.
In addition, the airport company will introduce direct routes, including a LATAM service from Santiago de Chile, offering 6,000 seats for direct flights to Punta del Este throughout the season.
In line with its commitment to enhancing the travel experience, Punta del Este has recently rolled out biometric boarding bridges, equipped with modern technology in the commercial passenger terminal to simplify the immigration process.
This modern border control system, which features facial-recognition algorithms and self-service technologies, enables the terminal to deliver an automated experience for passengers at control points.
The boarding bridges are now operational, providing seamless access for those arriving or departing through this airport terminal. This innovative solution, also used at Carrasco Airport, has reduced the average immigration processing time to just 15 seconds. ✈️
