The sum was raised through onboard collections on Qatar Airways flights, with the airline matching any donations made by passengers.

Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Contracts and Procurement Mohsen Alyafei presented a cheque with the donation to EAC representatives at a ceremony that took place at the World Innovation Summit for Education in Doha.

Launched in 2012 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, EAC aims to significantly reduce the number of children around the world who are missing out on their right to education.

The funds raised will go towards EAC projects active in more than 30 countries affected by poverty, conflict, gender discrimination and natural disaster. To date, more than 2.5 million children have access to education programmes thanks to projects co-funded by EAC.

As an official resource partner of Educate A Child, Qatar Airways uses its communications platforms to reach its global passenger base in order to help advance the goals of EAC.

Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker commented: “Qatar Airways is honoured to be a communications ambassador for the Educate a Child initiative, championing its messages to a worldwide audience through our travelling public. The funds presented today symbolise the overwhelming support received from our passengers, together with the matched funds from Qatar Airways, and highlights the enthusiasm which this initiative has drawn from all corners of the globe.”

Education Above All CEO Marcio Barbosa said: “We appreciate the resources that Mr Al Baker and the Qatar Airways team have put towards raising awareness of the issue of out of school children and their financial contribution towards accelerating our efforts to close the gap.”
