Queenstown Airport international traffic leaps +18.6% – 10/02/09

NEW ZEALAND. Queenstown Airport handled 364,408 passengers in the half year to 31 December 2008, which is the first half of the company’s fiscal year (1 July–30 June).

The result was marked by a rise of +18.6% in international passengers on the same period last year to total 51,765.

Queenstown had a +21% lift in international flights from the east coast of Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane), boosted by the extension of flights beyond the traditional ski season flights in the southern winter.

Domestic passengers were slightly down to 312,733, a -2.7% decrease.

In Queensland Airport’s previous financial year to the end of June 2008, it handled 700,640 passengers. Within this, international passenger numbers grew to 62,276, +16% up year on year, supported by an increase of +15% in international flights. Domestic passengers grew to 638,364, a +6% increase year on year, with a +1% increase in flights.

On the half-year results, Queenstown Airport Corporation CEO Steve Sanderson commented: “The passenger numbers through the airport have held par against last year. Considering the economic downturn this is a very pleasing outcome.”

Queenstown Airport serves primarily tourist visitors to the ‘adventure capital of the world’. Duty Free Stores New Zealand operates the duty free concession.
