RoCo Brands expands portfolio with Velvet Cap Irish Whiskey acquisition

The Netherlands-based premium spirits distributor RoCo Brands has acquired renowned Velvet Cap Irish Whiskey from Blackwater Distillery.

The acquisition allows RoCo Brands to tap into the increasing global demand for Irish whiskey, one of the fastest-growing spirits categories. The company noted its commitment to expanding Velvet Cap’s foundation and footprint in domestic and international markets.

Founded in 1880 in Dungarvan, Co Waterford by Thomas Power & Co, Velvet Cap was reintroduced in 2020, driven by a commitment to traditional Irish craftsmanship.

Velvet Cap is a triple-casked whiskey, blending malt and grain whiskeys, and matured in bourbon, port and sherry casks, imparting a rich, well-rounded taste.

The range is rounded out by two single malts, the Bordeaux Cask 5 Year Old and the Peated Sherry Cask.

RoCo Brands Managing Director Nigel Truphet said: “We are thrilled to welcome Velvet Cap to the RoCo Brands family. This acquisition aligns with our mission to preserve and enhance brands that showcase authenticity and craftsmanship. Velvet Cap’s reputation for quality and its deep-rooted Irish heritage make it a perfect addition to our exciting portfolio.”

Drinks and travel retail industry veteran Tim Young, a Founder and Director of RoCo Brands, told The Moodie Davitt Report: “Velvet Cap is currently available in Irish airports and we would very much like to expand its footprint to other travel retail locations. In fact we have a travel retail-exclusive Velvet Cap whiskey bottled at 46% abv in a TR-exclusive tin.”

Blackwater Distillery Founder and CEO Peter Mulryan added: “We are proud of what we’ve achieved with Velvet Cap, and we’re confident that RoCo Brands is the ideal partner to take the brand to new heights. Their expertise in premium spirits will ensure Velvet Cap continues to thrive and grow in the competitive Irish whiskey landscape.”

RoCo Brands is focused on expanding Velvet Cap’s presence, engaging new whiskey enthusiasts while remaining dedicated to the brand’s craftsmanship and quality.

As a close partner, Blackwater will continue to support RoCo Brands with new product development, bottling and order fulfilment of Velvet Cap. ✈
