Pernod Ricard-owned blended Scotch whisky brand Royal Salute is replacing its signature porcelain flagon with a sustainable coated glass flagon. The transition begins this month, starting with Royal Salute’s 21 Year Old Signature Blend, the brand’s best-selling expressions. It will be extended to include the complete Royal Salute portfolio over coming months.
The recyclable glass vessel — which is almost identical to the original flagon — reduces the carbon footprint of Royal Salute’s primary packaging by -70%.
The transition follows Pernod Ricard’s ‘Good Times from a Good Place’ sustainability roadmap. It also progresses Royal Salute’s goal of shifting all packaging to 100% recyclable, reusable and or compostable sources by 2025.

As part of its ‘Good Times from a Good Place’ programme, Pernod Ricard has partnered with leading circular economy network the Ellen McArthur Foundation. The foundation aims to bring together leading businesses, thought leaders and innovators to help the world transition towards a circular economy.
“It is incredibly important to us that we play our part in taking care of the world around us, by reducing the environmental impact of our whiskies, saving precious natural resources and helping mitigate climate change,” commented Royal Salute and Ballantine’s Global Marketing Director Mathieu Deslandes.
“Looking to the future is at the very heart of Royal Salute; our whisky that is laid down in casks today will be aged for a minimum of 21 years, so we need to act today to meet Royal Salute lovers’ expectations in the future.”
Chivas Brothers [the Scotch whisky business of Pernod Ricard] Chairman and CEO Jean-Etienne Gourgues commented, “Sustainability isn’t a nice to have, it’s a high priority, and I’m proud to see Royal Salute’s iconic bottle transition from ceramic to glass – this represents a key milestone in Chivas Brothers’ journey towards 100% recyclable packaging.”
