THAILAND. Sawasdee Duty Free Plaza will open in Phuket on 15 October with high revenue expectations.
The country’s newest duty free retailer plans to offer more than 2,000 items free of duties to local and foreign tourists, according to local reports.
Royal Sawasdee Co Managing Director Weeravit Lew said the range would include perfumes and cosmetics, audio electronics, sports equipment, liquor, cigarettes and Otop clothing.
“The duty free shop’s daily revenue should exceed THB10 million (US$243,000),” he said.
More products will be available later, including fashion from Italy and Thai and supermarket goods. The shop was constructed as part of the government’s drive to revive tourism in the Andaman Sea region. The sector was devastated by last December’s tsunami.
Purchases are limited to THB20,000 (US$486) for tourists who stay up to three nights in Phuket, Krabi or Phang Nga. For more than three nights, the purchase limit is THB50,000 (US$1,216).
