CHINA. Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, which serves domestic passengers, plans to issue bids for a luxury brands project in mid-December. Offers are due by the end of January 2023.
The main cities served by T2 flights include Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Tianjin and more than 50 other key domestic destinations.
In pre-pandemic 2019, the terminal served some 37.41 million passengers. Although T2 was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, passenger flow began to gradually increase from June.
The flights on the south side of the terminal are mainly operated by China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, while those on the north side are served by Air China, China Southern Airlines and regional airlines.
According to an internal survey conducted last year, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 enjoys an excellent passenger flow structure, notable for strong consumer purchasing power.
The ratio of male to female passengers is about 67/33% with business travellers accounting for more than 68.4% of the total passenger flow.
Tourists with a monthly household income of CNY8,001-15,000 (US$1,150-2,155) accounted for the highest proportion (45.1%) of passengers and 29.7% had a monthly income of more than CNY15,000. They have strong purchasing power and decisive purchase decisions, the airport company noted.
After ten years of continuous upgrading, Hongqiao Airport’s ‘Tier-1 Brand Avenue’ has attracted 21 internationally renowned luxury brands, including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Ferragamo, Chanel, Cartier, Armani, Tod’s and others.
A third of those brands were making their Chinese domestic airport debut.
Other recent world-class additions include Bottega Veneta, Christian Dior, and Tiffany & Co. – all part of T2’s brand avenue. Since August, they have been joined by further top names including Celine and Loewe. Additionally, Italian luxury brand MaxMara, renowned fashion brand PINKO, and Tory Burch reopened after upgrading.
LVMH-owned luxury house Loro Piana and the great British brand Burberry will also launch later this year and in early 2023, respectively.
The latest luxury project is located in the triangular area on the south side of T2’s departures restricted area.
The airport company hopes to create an internationally renowned luxury zone that serves as an extension of Hongqiao Airport’s existing luxury brand avenue, displaying unique and eye-catching high-end store designs.
The zone includes perfumes, cosmetics, luxury boutiques fashion accessories, jewellery and watches.
