SMT Duty Free goes north to Alaska

US. SMT Duty Free is opening a major new duty free outlet in the Alaskan port of Ketchikan.

Ketchikan has become an important port for cruiselines operating the scenic Alaskan route.

The 1,600sq ft (150sq m) store will offer spirits, wines and tobacco.

Executive vice-president marketing Eddie Ferenczi told The Moodie Report: “Alaska is a big challenge for us, it’s a very exciting opportunity.” Traffic numbers are rising fast, with some 900,000 cruise passengers expected to take Alaskan sailings this year – on par with any Caribbean destination.
