Spanish airports company Aena confirms Madrid and Catalonia duty free contract award to Dufry

SPAIN. The board of Spanish airports company Aena today confirmed the award to Dufry of the rights to two key duty free packages, covering Madrid-Barajas Airport and Catalonian airports (Barcelona-El Prat, Girona-Costa Brava and Reus). As reported previously, no bids were received for these packages in the first round of bidding, which comprised six lots in total.

Aena said that these four airports account for 44% of the total Minimum Guaranteed Rents (MAG) set for the duty free tender.

Madrid-Barajas is one of the prized duty free concessions in the Aena network, now awarded after a second bid round

This concludes the contract renewal process for duty free shops at Spanish airports. The new concessions run for 12 years (with the option of three annual extensions); current contracts are in force until 31 October 2023.

In total, the bids presented for all airports exceed 2023 rents by +16.3% (current 2023 MAG versus that offered for 2024), according to Aena.

Aena said: “These results demonstrate the appeal of the business, as well as the consolidation of the recovery of air traffic after the pandemic. They also highlight the excellent technical proposals, whose initiatives will be implemented in the shops at airports to offer top-quality service.”

In the first round of bids, four contracts were awarded as follows:

  • Andalusia-Mediterranean: Dufry
  • Canary Islands: Canariensis (Dufry)
  • Balearic Islands: Dufry
  • Northern Airports (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Basque Country): Lagardère Travel Retail

These lots and their 23 airports accounted for 56% of the total Minimum Guaranteed Rents (MAG) set for the six-lot duty free tender, Aena said.

Across the board, the contract duration has been substantially increased, rising from seven to 12 years for all concessions, with the option of three annual extensions.

The contracts are expected to generate some €18 billion in sales over their collective terms, according to an Aena statement during the process. They include 86 duty free points of sale, plus many additional premises dedicated to other categories. The stores across the six packages will occupy some 66,000sq m of space in total (more than +40% ahead of space available currently). ✈
