Spanish passenger traffic rises +3.2% in June

SPAIN. Passenger traffic at Spanish airports controlled by AENA rose +3.2% in June, driven by solid increases at Madrid Barajas (+4.3%), Barcelona El Prat (+5.1%), Gran Canaria (+10.7%), Lanzarote (+12.1%) and Bilbao (+10.1%).

The modest increases – published this week by Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) – need to be viewed, however, in the context of a very poor year in 2009. Spain’s troubled economy and the soft inbound British market, big factors last year, continue to plague Spanish tourism.

For the first six months of 2010 passenger traffic across Spanish airports rose just +1.0%, underlining the difficult market. Madrid Barajas rose +3.5% and Barcelona El Prat by +2.2% (see table).
