SSP Switzerland opens upscale restaurant Walter at Zürich Airport

Walter: A new upscale outlet at Switzerland’s key gateway

SWITZERLAND. SSP Switzerland has opened a new Mediterranean-style dining venue called Walter at Zürich Airport.

The restaurant, the result of a co-development by SSP and Zürich Airport, has been designed as a further premium offer at an airport that already houses a number of upscale restaurants, including the award-winning Center Bar.

SSP said the new restaurant features “sumptuous furnishings and a casual yet elegant vibe”. It is decorated in slate-colour greys highlighted with natural wood. Above its central bar, a floating glass wine cabinet created by wine importer and retail partner Riegger creates a focal point. This installation holds over 2,000 bottles and can be used as a platform for a DJ booth or a venue for a private wine-tasting. Designed by interior architect and DJ Roger Bächthold, the restaurant also features a state-of-the-art sound system.

Walter’s menu encompasses a selection of Mediterranean dishes ranging from small plates and snacks to main courses. A choice of pastas, which are hand-made on site, includes classics such as spaghetti alla carbonara, maccharoni al pesto verde, or stozzapreti al gameroni. Focacce on offer include focaccia Napoli, filled with tomato, mozzarella and basil, or Valentina, with bresaola ham, figs and provolone cheese.

There is also a buffet of hot and cold dishes, and fresh, seasonal ingredients are incorporated across the menu. There is also a breakfast selection with an Italian theme. SSP also pledges service guarantees of between six and 15 minutes.

The wine list includes some of the world’s best-known names, such as Pouilly-Fumé AC, Baron de Ladoucette, or Château Langoa Barton troisieme Grand Cru Classé as well as a broad selection of Swiss wines.

Cornelius Everke, SSP CEO DACH (Germany, Austria & Switzerland) & FRABEL (France, Belgium & Netherlands) said: “Walter will offer travellers at Zurich something a little out of the ordinary. Even its name, which might appear to be a traditional German sounding word, is in fact an acronym. Warm, Aromatisch, Lecker, Traumhaft, Erfrischend und Reichhaltig, loosely translated means Warm, Appealing, Lovely, Toothsome, Exquisite and Relishing. This is a flagship venue that we are certain will quickly gain a reputation as a must-visit restaurant for the discerning international traveller.”

Zürich Airport Senior Vice President Commercial, Patrick Graf added: “Walter is an important milestone as part of our strategy to deliver a variegated, extraordinary and entertaining dining experience to our passengers. Besides its stylish environment and the stunning view on the tarmac Walter pays also attention to new F&B trends such as food sharing or the opportunity to choose smaller meals, which was especially requested by female travellers.”
