UAE. Here’s your final chance of 2024 to win a great prize in our latest Strange Predictions* contest hosted by Strange Nature Gin of New Zealand. And what an important prediction it is.

Tomorrow, 20 December, is Dubai Duty Frees 41st anniversary. The travel retailer launched its operations on that day way back in 1983 and has subsquently grown to become the world’s number one single airport duty-free location (Dubai International/DXB).

Once again, Dubai Duty Free will celebrate the occasion with its highly anticipated 24-hour anniversary promotion, offering a -25% discount on a wide range of products. The annual event, a highlight for travellers during the festive season, will run across DXB and Al Maktoum International airports.

The promotion will commence at 00:00 on 20 December and conclude at midnight.

So to our contest. What sales volume will Dubai Duty Free generate in this extraordinary sales period in UAE Dirhams?

Make your estimate and as with all our Strange Predictions competitions, the winner will receive a bottle of the outstanding Strange Nature Gin, whose spirit base is drawn from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Strange indeed.

To help your projection, Dubai Duty Free’s sales on its 40th anniversary in 2023 reached AED54.2 million (which translated then as US$14.8 million), up +53% year-on-year as the post-COVID travel recovery continued to surge.

Some more assistance:

  • Buoyed by a strong performance this November, Dubai Duty Free recorded sales of US$1.94 billion in the first 11 months of 2024. The retailer is on course to exceed US$2 billion in turnover for the year, having posted US$2.16 billion last year.
  • 2024 appears to be ending strongly. November sales reached US$205.67 million, the fifth-best monthly performance ever.
  • 30 November saw a daily sales record for this year at US$8.46 million, while 29 November was the third-highest sales day at US$8.24 million.

So our competition is simple:

  1. In UAE Dirham terms, what sales will Dubai Duty Free generate in those 24 hours? Please give an exact rather than rounded figure in AED millions.

Rules:

    • Only entries from bona-fide members of the travel retail and aviation community will be accepted.
    • Judge’s decision is final.

Strange Predictions

Strange Nature, the quirky super-premium New Zealand gin, has gained impressive traction in travel retail and selected local markets since its launch in October 2021, is partnering with The Moodie Davitt Report in a pioneering readers’ competition called Strange Predictions.

The year-round programme will feature a series of predictive contests designed to test readers’ punditry skills across a myriad of events, ranging from sporting contests to political elections and other intriguing – and sometimes strange – events.

Strange Nature General Manager – Owner Rhys Julian said: “At Strange Nature we like to embrace the strange.  We consider our gin to be stranger than most, considering its grape origins, one botanical as well as sustainability and traceability credentials.

“Therefore, in fitting with the brand we thought partnering with The Moodie Davitt Report’s Strange Predictions was a perfect fit. A fun competition for everyone, slightly left of centre, is very much our vibe.”
