VIETNAM/SINGAPORE. In a key development for Vietnam’s tourism sector, Vietnamese company Sun Group* and Changi Airports International** (CAI) of Singapore have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to transform Phu Quoc International Airport into Vietnam’s first ‘airport destination’.
The project will integrate aviation infrastructure with tourism, retail and entertainment experiences.
CAI will provide advisory services to enhance airport operations, commercial performance, air connectivity, and capacity and service standards.
The collaboration positions Phu Quoc island as a world-class aviation and tourism hub within the Asia Pacific region ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) due to be held in November 2027, when the airport will welcome global leaders and international visitors.
Phu Quoc is famed for its gleaming white sand beaches, earning it the tag ‘Pearl Island’. The island is also acclaimed for its sustained environmental conservation efforts and cultural heritage. Much of Phu Quoc has been protected by a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006.

Phu Quoc International Airport, which served about 6 million passengers in 2025, has experienced rapid growth in recent years.

Traffic has surged during peak travel periods, setting new records for international flights and reflecting strong demand from both regional and global markets.

Under the partnership, CAI will work with Sun Group to manage Phu Quoc International Airport according to international standards. The collaboration follows extensive exchanges in both Vietnam and Singapore, exploring opportunities to combine the two players’ complementary expertise in destination development and airport management.
Building a world-class airport destination together
Globally, Singapore Changi Airport is widely recognised for its operational excellence, combining efficient airport management with unique passenger experiences such that the airport is a destination in itself.

Sun Group, meanwhile, has developed integrated tourism, resort and entertainment ecosystems across Vietnam, transforming previously lesser-known destinations into internationally recognised travel hubs.
By bringing together the best of CAI’s airport management expertise and Sun Group’s destination development experience, the partners aim to create a distinctive travel destination at Phu Quoc, where aviation infrastructure and tourism experiences are seamlessly integrated.

Sun Group Chairman Dang Minh Truong said: “Airports today play a far greater role than transportation infrastructure. They are gateways that shape the first impression of a destination.
“Singapore Changi Airport is widely recognised for its operational excellence and pioneering airport destination concept. Through this partnership with Changi Airports International, we aim to develop Phu Quoc International Airport into a true ‘airport destination’ where the travel experience begins the moment visitors arrive.”

CAI Chief Executive Officer Eugene Gan commented, “We are impressed by Sun Group’s vision for developing Phu Quoc as the next upcoming travel destination.
“Its integrated tourism and entertainment eco-system provides a strong foundation for the long-term development of Phu Quoc International Airport as a key gateway for the island. We look forward to contributing our expertise to enable Sun Group to create a world-class airport experience.” 🏝️ ✈
