FINLAND. Hi-tech watch specialist Suunto, handled by Dutch distributor Sea & Sky Supply in travel retail, has announced the forthcoming launch of the Suunto M9i, an improved version of its M9 wrist-top computer for sailors.
The device is said to enable easy transmission of sailing data to a PC via a USB cable. Battery charging is also possible from the laptop via a USB cable.
Available from March 2006, the Suunto M9i GPS function delivers navigational information on speed, heading, and distance to help the sailor keep the vessel on course. Up to 50 routes and 500 points can be stored in the memory. The built-in compass allows the sailor to memorise wind directions for tactical racing. The device also enables quick reaction to a Man Over Board rescue situation.
Suunto Sail Manager software links Suunto M9i to a PC and is claimed to make navigation much easier by visualising the routes on marine charts. As well as helping sailors to identify areas in their performance that need to be improved, it reviews the sailor’s journey.
