USA. The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board approved and awarded 11 concession contracts on Thursday, covering 65 shops, restaurants, bars and kiosks at Tampa International Airport. The key duty free concession in international airside zones E and F was captured by World Duty Free Tampa, a division of World Duty Free Group.
The six food & beverage contract awards were split between HMSHost, SSP America, TPA Hospitality Partners and HBF Tampa Partners. In retail, apart from the duty free concession, other contracts were awarded to Paradies-TPA, NewsLink of Tampa, Stellar Partners and HG Tampa.
With multiple concessionaires (HMSHost had been the dominant player since 1971 but its long-term contract expires this year), Tampa Airport said it aimed to deliver a greater variety of concepts and foster more competition among the airport’s shops and restaurants.
The airport said in a statement: “A priority for the Concessions Redevelopment Program, estimated to be worth about US$1.3 billion in gross sales over the next ten years, was to bring local flavour and a Sense of Place to the airport. More than 40% of the food & beverage part of the programme will be dedicated to local concepts and brands. Airside C, Tampa International Airport’s busiest airside, will consist almost entirely of local retail, food & beverage concepts.”
How the concessions layout in the Main Terminal will take shape |
Airside A and C (below) will feature a radically different base of concessions |
Among some of the local concepts throughout the airport are:
• The Tampa Life/Dali store in the Main Terminal featuring merchandise and gifts from local museums, with rotating displays to reflect seasonal events
• Airside C’s RumFish Grill, which will partner with the Florida Aquarium to maintain a large aquarium filled with indigenous species and has secured a commitment from the Animal Planet TV series ‘Tanked’ to broadcast its installation
• Airport locations for local businesses such as Ducky’s; Burger 21; Ulele; Louis Pappas; Bavaro’s Pizza; the Columbia Restaurant; Four Green Fields; Bella’s; New York, New York Pizza; Cigar City Brewing and Goody Goody
• Grab and go foods from local suppliers such as Alessi Bakery, Sono Café and Buddy Brew Coffee at news and convenience shops.
The new programme will also introduce some new concepts at Tampa, including:
• The first Hard Rock Café in a North American airport
• The Home Shopping Network’s Travelsmith store, which will be used to broadcast product launches
• The Starbucks Evening café – the first such concept in the Tampa Bay market
• Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus in nearly all restaurants
• Touch-screen tablets for quick ordering and check-out at restaurants along with USB ports and power outlets for guests.
World Duty Free is among the big winners of the E and F concessions |
The airport’s ACDBE (minority) participation will increase from three companies to 15. The annual gross sales for ACDBE businesses will rise from US$12 million to an expected US$50 million. Some 12 of the 15 ACDBE partners are from the Orlando/Tampa/Sarasota area.
“I’m proud of the Tampa International Airport staff and Aviation Authority board members who worked so hard to bring this incredible program to life,” said Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano. “I have no doubt that the final results will be amazing and that all who visit Tampa International Airport from around the world will agree.”
Construction of the new stores, restaurants, bars, newsstands and duty free shops will take place in phases, beginning with the airside zones in July. The entire programme should be in full operation by the end of 2017.
