TÜRKIYE. TAV Airports has won the tender to develop and operate Esenboğa Airport between 2025 and 2050, pending official approvals. The contract award will extend its existing agreement, which runs to May 2025.
The bidding was held today at the State Airports Authority headquarters in Ankara, where Groupe ADP company TAV lodged an offer of €475 million.

The first phase of TAV’s proposed investment consists of adding a new runway, a new traffic control tower and cargo facilities. Works will begin in 2023 and are scheduled to be completed in 36 months.
The second phase includes a terminal extension which will be realised by around 2040, depending on the rate of traffic increases at the airport. Additionally, TAV plans to build a solar energy farm with a capacity of 5MW, in accordance with its sustainability commitments.
The total investment will be up to €300 million in the first phase, and approximately €90 million in the second phase.
TAV Airports CEO Serkan Kaptan said: “We are operating Ankara Esenboğa – the gateway to the Turkish capital – successfully since 2006. The terminal which we built back then reflects the ambitions and the modern face of the Republic. During this period, we have quadrupled the passenger traffic in Ankara, and worked towards increasing direct flights in collaboration with our stakeholders.”
He added: “In addition to being the political centre of the country, Ankara is a touristic hotspot with a rich history and a hub connecting eastern Anatolia. Today we reiterate our commitment to the development of the aviation industry in Türkiye.”
During the first 11 months of 2022, Ankara Esenboğa Airport served 7.9 million passengers, as it climbs back towards the 13.7 million passengers it served in 2019.
In 2004, TAV Airports – which has a global footprint covering 90 airports in 29 countries – won the built-operate-transfer tender for the airport. The new 182,000 sq m terminal was completed in 2006.
