The Design Solution takes lead role in Toronto Pearson Airport projects

CANADA. The Design Solution is to take a leading role in commercial redevelopments at Toronto Pearson International Airport after winning individual contracts from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and The Nuance Group North America.

The airport and shop design consultancy will plan new commercial areas at terminals one and three for GTAA and will design all of Nuance’s duty free shops at the airport.

At T3, a new terminal layout will channel transborder US traffic through one security channel and all other international and domestic passengers through a separate channel. Both zones will feature duty free shops, food & beverage outlets, speciality retail and common seating areas.

The Design Solution Director Robbie Gill said: “We were part of the Arup team that worked on these principles a year ago and are thrilled to have a new appointment to plan these new major commercial areas in detail.”

Design Solution is charged with creating commercial areas to reflect the unique space at T1, dominated by a dramatic Richard Serra sculpture

At T1 the renewed commercial area operated by Nuance will be located at the end of the pier, where most international traffic departs. The Design Solution said that the pier is dominated by a dramatic sculpture, and that the commercial areas will “balance art, architecture, commerce and operations in a unique space”.

The Design Solution has worked with Nuance for four years, mainly at European locations, including recent projects at Lisbon, Zürich and Antalya airports.

Gill said: “There are different dynamics between this market and the European model but the principles are the same: clear messages, great products displayed forcefully, confident circulation routes and most of all, a strong local flavour that gives the stores a firm grounding in their location.”
