INTERNATIONAL. Issue 38 of The Moodie Report e-Zine, travel retail’s only weekly magazine, features comment, data and analysis of the top travel retail stories of the week, presented via our unique multimedia format.
There could only be one choice of cover story this week. Martin Moodie assesses the sensational developments at Hong Kong International Airport, where DFS is poised (subject though to final negotiations) to pull off a stunning triple triumph in the core category concession tenders for liquor & tobacco, perfumes & cosmetics and airside general merchandise.
In the unforgiving world of airport bidding, there are always losers as well as winners and he pays sympathetic tribute to both long-term incumbents, Sky Connection and Nuance-Watson (HK).
Moodie writes: “Both have stood consistently for quality, innovation and the pioneering of new brands and new concepts. Both are led by intelligent, personable and highly competent executives (Nuance-Watson’s Alessandra Piovesana and Sky Connection’s Baker Salleh).
“Both have been there since the beginning and are synonymous with travel retailing at Hong Kong International Airport. Initially it will seem a very strange place without them.”
In another major story, Deputy Publisher Dermot Davitt travels to Portugal, where retailer Lojas Francas de Portugal (a joint venture between The Nuance Group and TAP) lat week unveiled a splendid new walk-through store at Lisbon Airport. We bring you coverage of the new offer in words, pictures, video and audio.
In our news pages we look at a big breakthrough for Lotte Duty Free at Singapore Changi Airport, where the South Korean retailer has been awarded the fashionwear concession at Terminal 1.
There’s big news too from Dufry, as the Swiss travel retailer announces a major reorganisation, marked on the one hand by decentralisation operationally, and on the other by a global procurement platform. It’s a clever mix. And we report from the US, where Westfield Concession Management has snapped up a second 17-year contract covering retail and F&B concession management at LAX.
Our Data Room section focuses on the latest OAG ranking of world airports by international commercial passenger flight departures, always an interesting feature.
In Site Lines, our web reviewer extraordinaire Melody Ng assesses the websites of two airlines, Cyprus Airways and Kuwait Airways. And our regular ‘Out in the e-Sphere’ column tests out Munich Airport’s new app.
And finally, in our last Never Hide interview, sponsor Ray-Ban turns the tables by asking The Moodie Report Founder Martin Moodie a series of searching questions. Who have been his greatest inspirations? Turn to page 33 to find out.
We hope you enjoy The Moodie Report e-Zine and look forward to your feedback.
