The Sweet Emporium targets global expansion in travel retail

The Sweet Emporium, an Irish family-run confectionery business, has launched into travel retail with a range of traditional sweets. The company has reported “˜enormous success’ with its inaugural travel retail listing with Ryanair, where the brand claims to be outselling major confectionery brands in the eight months since its launch.

The Sweet Emporium was established in Dublin two years ago by ex-haulier Audrey Groome. Described as being born from hard times and recession, the company now has two stores and is planning a strategic expansion into the travel retail sector. Initial expansion into the channel has been assisted and supported by the Fingal Enterprise Board.

A second listing has recently been confirmed with Aer Lingus. The Sweet Emporium has contracted agent, New Thing, to facilitate this global expansion.

Commenting on recent developments, The Sweet Emporium Managing Director Audrey Groome said: “We owe a great deal to Ryanair for their confidence in championing our products. We were new to travel retail, untried, untested and I am delighted that our products are performing so well on Ryanair. This has given us the determination to expand our travel retail business further.”

Ryanair Head of Retail Aoife Greene commented: “We find the company to be proactive and engaging. The product sells itself and we are now looking at more seasonal lines to drive gifting purchases. I am very excited for what the future holds for The Sweet Emporium as the quality of the product and the personnel behind it is grade A.”

The Sweet Emporium offers popular sweets as travel retail exclusives, as well as hand-picked, seasonal specials to suit specific retail channels and customers. Ongoing range developments also offer retailers an increasing number of choices, the company said.

The sweets are presented in portable, transparent and re-sealable tubes which are suitable for sharing or gifting. The Sweet Emporium tube retails at €6, regardless of the type of sweet.

The Sweet Emporium opened the first retail shop in the seaside town of Skerries in North County Dublin in June 2010, with the second shop opening in May 2011. It secured its first travel retail listing with Ryanair in December 2011 and its second with Aer Lingus in December 2012. New Thing was appointed to expand travel retail business in September 2012.
