UPDATED: Dufry signs Jomo Kenyatta International Airport concession

KENYA. Dufry Group and Kenya Airports Authority have signed a concession agreement for duty free retail services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s new Terminal 1A.

As reported this morning, the last legal obstacle to the signing was cleared last week when a challenge by Suzan General Trading was dismissed.

The agreement will see Dufry operate more than 751sq m retail space which will include duty free shops, F&B, and a communication and phone centre as well as foreign exchange services until 2024.

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Lucy Mbugua said: “Kenya Airports Authority is happy to be associated with Dufry which is one of the biggest duty free retailers in the world. With this agreement our passengers will be able to enjoy a superior airport experience, comparable to the best internationally. This will further enhance Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s status of being the preferred airport system hub in the region.”

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Terminal 1A will represent an important new element of Dufry’s African airport business

Dufry Group CEO Julian Díaz added: “We are very pleased about this new agreement with Kenya Airports Authority. Dufry’s new business in Kenya will allow us to further develop the business in Africa.”

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. It is the largest airport in the East and Central African region and a major hub for Africa, welcoming a total of six million passengers last year.

The signing brings to a close a tumultuous tender process in which the concession was first awarded to a joint venture led by The Nuance Group. That tender was then annulled by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board. The second tender process was challenged initially by two participants and finally by Suzan General Trading in an appeal dismissed last week.
