FAROE ISLANDS. Vagar Airport is to operate its duty free business in-house from May 2014. It takes over from Atlantic Airways, the principal airline using the Faroese airport.
A statement issued by the carrier to the stock exchange said: “Atlantic Airways has to stop operating duty free sales at Vagar Airport. Vága Floghavn P/F (Vagar Airport) has chosen to operate the duty-free stores on their own with effect from May 2014.”
Atlantic Airways has operated the duty free stores at Vagar Airport since January 2009.
The airline said: “Duty free sales have had a positive impact on earnings. Atlantic Airways will now evaluate other options for duty free sales.”
Vagar Airport is building a new terminal, with work expected to be complete by next Spring. It will be able to handle 350.000 passengers. Vagar Airport expects the passenger figure for 2013 to be around 235,000 passengers. The airport has seen an increase of +38% in the last ten years.
