WeChat and Alipay to become official Duty Free Philippines payment providers

PHILIPPINES/CHINA. A signing ceremony this week will see WeChat and Alipay become the official payment providers for Duty Free Philippines, the state-owned airports and downtown travel retailer in the Philippines.

WeChat is the Chinese multi-purpose messaging, social media and mobile payment app. It has over one billion monthly active users.

Alipay is another giant. The third-party mobile and online payment platform is owned by Ant Financial of China and headquartered in Shanghai.

The new partnership will benefit business at Duty Free Philippines’ newly opened downtown Luxe Duty Free store and at the retailer’s airport stores.

The signing of the memorandum of agreement is being held at 3pm in the Philippines tomorrow at Duty Free Philippines headquarters in Manila.

Duty Free Philippines Corporation Chief Operating Officer Vicente Angala; WeChat directors Robert Yupangco, Regina Yupangco, Bong De Ocampo; and Alipay Chief Executive Officer Henry Diaz and President Alvin Sunga will officiate.
