WHSmith Australia debuts hybrid concept The Book Cellar at Gold Coast Airport

AUSTRALIA. WHSmith Australia has launched a new proprietary hybrid concept The Book Cellar at Gold Coast Airport. It combines books, fine food and a café-bar experience in a single space.

The Book Cellar offers a curated selection of books, from bestsellers and new releases to niche genres including travel and cooking. There are also areas devoted to featured authors and seasonal collections.

A highlight of the store is the gourmet providore, crafted in collaboration with Donna Harrison, owner of Gold Coast brand Golosi Food Emporium. Here, travellers can shop for fine Queensland and international produce and gifts.

Completing the concept experience is the Long Shot Café & Bar, which has comfortable seating and offers a diverse menu of fresh and nutritious meals, paired with Seven Miles’ Cats Pyjamas blend coffee. Customers can also enjoy a selection of local wines and craft beers from Balter and Stone and Wood.

WHSmith Australia noted The Book Cellar’s design draws inspiration from the urban-chic style of the Gold Coast. The space features polished tile floors, warm wooden accents and commissioned artwork by local artist Franko, whose vibrant works are inspired by classic literature with a pop-art and street-art twist.

WHSmith Australia Managing Director Carl Hargrave commented: “I’m delighted WHSmith has been given the opportunity to open this first-of-its-kind store in Gold Coast Airport; it reflects our strong partnership with the Gold Coast Airport team. While we pride ourselves on being a leading news, book and convenience retailer in Australia, we continually strive to offer truly localised experiences.

“The Book Cellar combines a refined book selection, a gourmet food and gifting range, and a full-service café and bar. It’s a unique, beautiful store that captures the essence of its location. We can’t wait to welcome Gold Coast Airport’s passengers to this best-in-class experience.”

Queensland Airports Limited Chief Executive Officer Amelia Evans said: “We’re thrilled to expand our retail offering with the opening of The Book Cellar, further strengthening our valued partnership with WHSmith. This store is proudly stocked with locally sourced gourmet products, highlighting the finest from our surrounding regions.

“This opening marks another step in our commitment to supporting local businesses while enhancing the travel experience for our passengers, as part of our A$15 million [US$10.34 million] domestic retail refresh.” ‍
