Women’s groups mark new trend for Taiwan travel – 22/09/05

TAIWAN. The increasing number of Japanese visitors to Taiwan this year is being spearheaded by older women and their female counterparts in their 20s and 30s, according to the Taiwan Visitors Association (TVA).

Travel Journal International (TJI) Online reported that, until a few years ago, most female travellers travelled abroad in groups with two friends, but recently that has changed. TVA said that the number of groups with members ranging from four to five women – with one or two of them repeaters to Taiwan – are on the rise.

“The major contributing factors, we believe, are excellent cuisine, shopping opportunities and massage treatment in addition to word-of-mouth communications,” said a TVA official. “The increasing number of female groups led by Taiwan-repeaters indicates that Taiwan is a highly satisfactory destination by Japanese consumers and we should take advantage of that fact in promoting more Japanese visitors.”

The number of Japanese visiting Taiwan for the first eight months of 2005 between January and August surged by +35.4% for the same period a year earlier to 720,517.

TVA has embarked on promotional campaigns in the Japanese market to achieve its immediate goal of attracting 1 million Japanese this year. The record high of Japanese arrivals is 986,053 set in 2002, according to TVA.
