NETHERLANDS. Unveiling its first half results to June, Schiphol Group said that the average spend per departing international passenger at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol fell from €18.06 (US$21.73) to €17.13 (US$20.61).
“Passenger spend in bars and restaurants developed more favourably than that in the airport shops,” said the airport authority in a statement.
The group’s first half operating result was helped by a strong recovery in passenger traffic volumes, which rose by +8.4% year-on-year. The higher traffic should be seen against the background of the depressed state of global aviation in the first half of 2003, owing to the economic slowdown, the war in Iraq and the SARS outbreak.
Schiphol Group’s result after taxation increased by +11.4% to €76.7 million (US$92.27 million) in the first half of 2004. Operating income rose by +6.2% to €425.7 million (US$512.12 million).
Revenues from airport fees were up +18.1% at €246.1 million (US$296.06) while other airport fee revenues rose by €5.6 million (US$6.74). Income from concessions was up by +4.9% to €55.6 million (US$66.88 million) – failing to keep pace with traffic growth.
Schiphol Group’s Board of Management anticipates that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will serve around 42 million passengers for the whole of 2004. The relatively strong percentage growth in passenger volume seen in the first half of the year compared with the corresponding period of 2003 is not expected to continue into the second half of the year.
