ATÜ expands operations in Ankara and İzmir – 17/10/06

TURKEY. ATÜ, the duty free operator at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, has extended its business with 17 stores in the newly built İzmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara Esenboğa airports.

ATÜ, founded in 1999 and operational since the completion of the new terminal building at Istanbul Atatürk in January 2000, is a partnership between two major Turkish construction companies (AKFEN and TEPE Groups) and UNIFREE, the experienced Turkish duty free operator and retailer whose majority shareholder is Gebr Heinemann.

Both airports were constructed and recently inaugurated by Tepe-Akfen Ventures (TAV), winner of a Turkish State Airport Authority DHMI tender through a build-operate-transfer system. ATÜ is the sole duty free operator in both new terminals, as well as in its ongoing Istanbul Atatürk Airport operations.

Eleven stores are in service at İzmir Adnan Menderes, which opened officially near the Aegean coast city on 9 September. The retail area covers 3,426sq m in both the Departures and Arrivals terminals.

The main duty free store covers 1,264sq m. Located in the Departures terminal, it offers passengers a large selection of products from the core duty free categories of liquor, tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics, chocolates, confectionery and local delicacies. An accessories outlet is situated in the Departures area, along with a CIP (Commercially Important Passenger) store selling luxury items.

Inaugurated on 13 October, Ankara Esenboğa International Airport expands passenger capacity from two million to 10 million, giving a total of 2,272sq m duty free shopping space in the Turkish capital.

Five outlets serve the Departures terminal, including the main 1,155sq m duty free shop; this and a 700sq m store in Arrivals provide a wide range of world-famous products. A separate fashion and accessories outlet is found in Departures.
