GERMANY. Luxury leathergoods company MCM continues to strengthen its position in the Asia Pacific region with newly gained business in key airports. In other news, the brand is celebrating the opening of a stand-alone boutique in London’s Sloane Street this week.
In travel retail, a personalised freestanding unit has now opened in Singapore Changi Terminal 1 with King Power, where sales are already exceeding expectations, according to MCM Travel Retail Director Gerry Munday.
In August, a semi-personalised 12sq m unit will begin trading in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport with King Power Thailand, while Eraman will install a 23sq m personalised shop-in-shop at Kuala Lumpur International Airport the same month.
At a press conference last Tuesday during the TFWA Asia Pacific show in Singapore, Munday said the brand had made strong inroads into China this year and reported excellent trading through its stores in Beijing and Shanghai with Sunrise Duty Free, plus in domestic Terminal 3 with Hao Jie.
Further domestic locations start trading this month in Beijing in the Park Hyatt Hotel (144sq m) and The Peninsula (117sq m), while a 45sq m store is due to open in Beijing T2 Domestic within the next month.
Elsewhere, the brand continues to make steady progress in Europe and the Middle East. A personalised wall opens in Dubai Concourse 2 in June, while later this year sees a 25sq m shop-in-shop opening in Hamburg Airport with The Nuance Group and a 14sq m personalised corner in Cairo T3 through Egyptair. Gebr Heinemann has also expanded its distribution in both Munich and Istanbul Airports with semi-personalised units.
In London, MCM is poised to open a 127sq m store in prestigious Sloane Street on 22 May, which Munday described as “a perfect forerunner for the brand’s launch in Harrods in London Heathrow T3 this Autumn” with a semi-personalised 8sq m unit.
Speaking of the brand’s success so far, Munday enthused: “MCM’s progress in 2008, both on domestic and travel retail markets, is exceptional and the brand is stronger than ever in terms of its global positioning and image. We’ve got a full three days of appointments here in Singapore and are very much looking forward to introducing the Autumn/Winter 08 collection to buyers [pictured left]. It’s one of our best yet.”
