China Duty Free sends out a message of Hope to earthquake victims in Sichuan – 12/06/08

CHINA. In a vital industry-led initiative to aid victims of last month’s devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province, China Duty Free Group (CDFG) has today unveiled the China Duty Free – Hope Foundation.

The Foundation was created in partnership with government body the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF). CDFG launched its initiative at a ceremony in China today attended by its senior executives as well as parent company China International Travel Services (CITS) and China Youth Development Foundation.

CDFG General Manager Li Gang said: “Together we can rebuild victims’ homes and ignite their hopes”. He called on the worldwide travel retail industry to assist in the reconstruction effort.

CDFG today publishes an Open Letter to the industry via The Moodie Report, calling for support. The Moodie Report, which has already given separately to the process through Inflight Sales Group and Air China, will donate a further US$5,000 via the Hope Foundation. We urge others to support this fine, urgent and targeted cause.

WHY THE CHINA DUTY FREE – HOPE FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

On the afternoon of 12 May an earthquake that registered 8.0 on the Richter Scale hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province in China. So far, nearly 70,000 people have died and nearly 300,000 are injured.

China Duty Free Group’s earthquake relief effort will focus on building 20 ‘Hope Schools’

Stung by the news of this natural disaster, companies in China and abroad have already donated generously to the relief effort.

CDFG said: “However, we realised that reconstruction is a thorough and constant work, which needs long-term participation and effort. Hope Foundation aims at combining the power of international duty free suppliers, travel retail operators and consumers to participate in charity activities organised by CYDF.
