SPAIN. Spanish airports authority Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegatión Aérea (AENA) today opens the long-awaited new Terminal 1 at Barcelona El Prat Airport.

AENA described the terminal as “one of the greatest civil engineering projects ever undertaken in Europe” and said it combines advanced technologies with respect for the environment and a high quality of service.

The aluminum roofs cover an area 2.5 times the size of the Camp Nou football stadium (itself the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity of 98,772 seats), home to the city’s mighty Barcelona Football Club, which recently won the European Champions League.

The terminal will increase capacity at El Prat from around 30 million to 55 million. AENA said that the new terminal will enable El Prat to consolidate its position among Europe’s top ten airports.

The Moodie Report will be on location at El Prat tomorrow with senior executives from travel retailer Aldeasa – look out for our on location report and Picture Gallery this week, followed by a special edition of The Moodie Report PLUS (in PDF format) soon after.
