Davidoff unveils new store design concept at Zürich Airport

At the heart of the 60sq m Davidoff of Geneva store at Zürich Airport is a 30sq m walk-in humidor with glass frontage

Oettinger Davidoff Group is to open its new Davidoff of Geneva flagship store in the redesigned Airside Center at Zürich Airport on 1 December 2011, signalling the roll-out of the Swiss cigar brand’s new shop concept around the globe.

At the heart of the 60sq m store at Zürich Airport is a 30sq m walk-in humidor with generous glass frontage. The interior decoration seeks to radiate a Caribbean feeling with warm colours and wooden lamellae. Part of the store design concept is an in-store iPad app to help shoppers find their personal cigar.

The boutique aims to recreate the flair and savoir faire of the Dominican Republic, the country of manufacture of Davidoff cigars. In addition to offering professional advice and a broad quality range, it is designed to be “an oasis of peace and tranquillity at the often so frantic airport”, the company said.

Caribbean wooden lamellae, American cherry wood and warm colours as well as harmonious lighting are used to evoke a comfortable atmosphere.

A 30sq m walk-in humidor with broad glass frontage is situated at the heart of the store. The unobtrusive modern design consists of a combination of traditional classic and contemporary elements.

The new flagship store concept will be implemented from 2012 in Davidoff stores worldwide, in locations such as Basel, Palm Beach, Tokyo and Shanghai.

First in-store iPad app

Among the innovations at the Zürich Airport flagship is Davidoff’s first in-store iPad app where customers can evaluate their favourite cigars on an iPad. In return, they have to answer four questions about their personal smoking habits. In addition, the app informs customers about their nearest cigar lounge.

As well as containing product information about the Davidoff range, the app allows customers to send selected information directly to their own e-mail accounts or via Twitter and Facebook to friends. History and milestones of Davidoff, as well as a variety of films about the world of tobacco, can also be found on the iPad.

Davidoff’s new concept was designed by Stories, a leading French design agency for retail branding.

100 years of Davidoff of Geneva

This year Davidoff of Geneva celebrates its 100th anniversary. Henri Davidoff, who came from Kiev to Switzerland due to political unrest, opened the first tobacco store in Geneva in 1911 and laid the foundations for today’s worldwide network of 65 Davidoff flagship stores.

Henri Davidoff”˜s son, Zino, learned the tobacco trade from scratch and stayed several years in South and Central America to deepen his knowledge of tobacco and cigars. In 1930 he returned to Switzerland and successfully managed the business for 40 years. In 1970 Zino Davidoff transferred the business to the Oettinger Group.
