Lisbon completes phase 1 of retail renovation with new walk-through store

PORTUGAL. Airport operator ANA Aeroportos de Portugal has completed the first phase of the renovation of its Departures retail offer at Lisbon Airport Terminal 1. The project has seen the addition of a new walk-through duty free store – said to be the first of its kind in Portugal – operated by The Nuance-Group-TAP joint venture Lojas Francas de Portugal under the Just for Travellers_ Duty Free Store retail fascia.

As part of the renovation, a number of upscale fashion, accessories and jewellery boutiques have also been added, featuring brands such as Ermenegildo Zegna, Salvatore Ferragamo, Burberry, Lacoste and H Stern. Ralph Lauren and Montblanc stores are to open in the weeks ahead. A multi-brand fashion store, BeTrend.store, has also opened, offering Armani Jeans, Guess, Furla, Michael Kors and DKNY among other labels.

The Just for Travellers_ Duty Free Store walk-through outlet offers a full range of fragrances & cosmetics, liquor and confectionery, along with a large section dedicated to regional items, called Taste Portugal. In beauty, corners for Christian Dior, Lancôme, Emporio Armani and Chanel are prominent, alongside personalised areas for brands new to Lisbon, including MAC, Kiehl’s, Body Shop, Sisley and Armani Cosmetics.

In keeping with Nuance’s new Duty Free Store concept unveiled at Antalya and Zürich airports last year, Lisbon’s new T1 store deploys tablet technology to provide customers with product information, notably in the fragrances, cigars and whisky sections. Digital screens are also visible throughout the store, displaying information on the latest products and promotions.

Other brands available in Lisbon’s Departures area include Pandora, Swarovski, Springfield, Women’secret, Accessorize, L’Occitane, Starbucks, Porsche Design, Godiva, Neuhaus, Lanidor and Fauchon.

ANA Retail Director Luis Rodolfo said the new retail area would allow the company to better serve the needs of affluent passengers travelling from Lisbon to South America and Africa. ANA also argued the project will turn Lisbon into “a benchmark for Europe”¦and to put ANA at the level of the very best of best practice worldwide”.

The Lisbon project was carried out by architecture firm Broadway Malyan. The company’s Lisbon office director Stuart Rough said: “The conclusion of this phase is another step towards completing the airport’s redesign project and bears witness to the partnership developed between our design specialists and the client. We’re keen on supporting the implementation of the next project phases that should be completed by the end of the year and will completely transform the experience of passengers using the airport.”

The Lisbon project is part of ANA’s plan to transform the airport retail offer in Portugal, as part of its Flight 555 strategic initiative to implement five new concepts at five Portuguese airports over a five-year period.

The objective of the plan is to generate €75 million in retail income by 2016 (equivalent to around €366 million in concessionaire turnover). ANA achieved retail income of €50 million across the airports of Lisbon, Porto, Faro and the Azores last year.
